Of the 7 billion people who live on this Earth, 3.3 billion now live in cities, and the world’s population continues to grow. Acquiring food for all these people will become a major global issue. Fish Species have continued to decline since the 1940’s. We are losing one of our most vital natural and free food sources.
The Fish Shelter aims to create a facility for marine education of the seas surrounding Istanbul. The Bosphoros Strait, The Golden Horn, Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea.The project aims to educate the Istanbullus and tourists alike about the seasonality of certain species of fish, the preparation of Fish, and overall about the actions to be undertaken to save the fish species locally and globally.
Investigations of Program began by studying the existing Fish markets and fish Restaurants in Istanbul. [Image 2] Investigations found that the markets dominated the areas in which they occurred until noon, while the restaurants then took over and opened until 10pm, this allowed me to begin to realise that as a city which is active 24 hours a day, Istanbul needed a site within the city that would also be in use 24 hours a day, I therefore created a program to fulfil this. The project includes a docking area for a research vessel, docking areas for fishing vessels, a fish restaurant and fisherman’s lounge, fish market areas, a smoking Tower with look-out point, Fishermen’s quarters, research laboratory, library, education area, cooking demonstration area and filleting areas throughout.
